Precious Moments

I've always been one to enjoy sitting in the background taking photos of life as it happens. Yesterday morning, it was my "job" (I say job because I really did enjoy it). Of course, when I'm not just doing it for myself, I always get so nervous that it won't turn out well or that the client won't like the photos or that I'll wish I could redo everything once I'm done! I don't know why I'm like that, but I am. This was one of the rare times I've accepted someone's invitation to take personal photos, and the first time the person wanted candids (not posed formals). She's part of the editorial group I've grown to enjoy so much, and because of that I said yes. And tonight as I go through photos and can't resist printing some to see how they look nice and big ... I'm so glad I spent the morning with them. The photos are precious!

Brownies at the zoo!

Our troop number was drawn and the girls got to enjoy a special day at the zoo. They were given a guided tour, learned about animals in all different regions, had a fun activity (made a bird feeder), and earned a badge! Isn't that cool? If you're brave enough to look through all the photos, click on the link below for the web album:

It's Snowing ... AGAIN!

My cousin sent a couple of her snowflake photos over this morning. Can you believe this picture? She ROCKS!!! I asked if I could use one on my blog, and I haven't heard from her, but I'm impatient so I'm blogging before I get bogged down. I'm so excited about her photos. Isn't this one GREAT? I have no idea how she did it ... but when I find out, I'm going to try it!!! I'm hoping she has a website I can post here as well. She's actually in the photography business, so locals might enjoy checking her out!

UPDATE: Here's my cousin's contact information! Her name is Amber Kaseman and you'll find her website at www.kasemanphoto.com or you can send her an email at kasemanphoto@cox.net

It's BIRTHDAY time!

OK ... so it's a late birthday. But it's special! We had a party for Mom while my aunt and uncle were in town. My cousin's family came, too. My step-brother is the TALL guy in the back (for those looking, he's single)! We had a HUGE cake with frosting a mile high it seemed.

Kanin ("rabbit" in Norwegian) Heaven

My daughter found a bunny. My son caught the bunny. I held the bunny while the kids fixed up a cozy box. It had pretty big injury on its back, so we were hoping to nurse it back to health. While I was holding it, the dog tried to taste it's tail and then started to lick the rabbit's belly! OH BOY. Unfortunately, the little guy didn't make it, and K buried the bunny. But like Grandma told the kids, we did something very special for the little rabbit and he could go to heaven in peace. His name was, Sky.

Girl Scout Slumber Party

MADAGASCAR! That was the theme tonight. The girls made a display for Thinking Day (a world-focused celebration of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around around the globe). They also painted little spoons because in Madagascar they only eat with wooden spoons! At least that's what the book said. The movie Madagascar was a natural for the night. So, 10 little girls with 5 moms all spent the night together laughing and giggling until the wee hours of the morning!

The artist at work ...

This "sit upon" was created and decorated by the little artist herself. I was actually quite impressed with her scrollwork on the boot (probably hard to see in this picture) and found it quite funny that she added Hilary Duff's name to the artwork. From now on, she will bring this to Brownie meetings and camping adventures.

What makes the stories special ...

It's the people behind the stories, and the lives connected to the people. Today I met a man with stories about pianos. Hopefully I'll get to hear more of them and even photograph him with some of his musical creations! But I won't let the cat out of the bag on his stories right now. Let's just say that I heard some things that should be pitched to some publications, and I would like to be the one to do it. He was at my house today looking over a piano that had been on a long journey into my living room. It has some things that need to be fixed, and thankfully someone referred me to this man who I believe to be quite a unique expert! I'm sure I'll have more to share about him later ... in the meantime, meet Piano #5.

The piano pictured above isn't as grand or as unique as the ones I heard about today ... at least not in the world of pianos. But in my world? This piano can't be replaced by the most valuable instrument on the planet. This is the piano I hope to pass on through the generations, each with their own stories in the strings of this instrument.

There used to be another piano in my immediate family. It was from my mother's side and I believe there was a photo of my great grandmother seated beside it. My memory holds it as a wonderful old sepia print with an elegantly prim woman and a piano covered in some kind of needlework with pictures upon pictures set out on top. I learned to play piano on the same instrument (and I'm hoping I have my stories/photos right now that I'm actually blogging about this) and loved it because it was part of my family. People I was related to but never met played those keys, and that made it special.

Photos are in my albums of me as a child all the way to a young lady as I learned to express myself. It was my solace many times. The last time I played the piano was in my mother's duplex (she had moved to town after my parents' divorce on the farm) in Montevideo, MN. When she got ready to go to Tulsa for a wonderful opportunity to get her doctorate, the piano found a temporary home to be played and loved while mom was away. BUT - the piano was lost. At one point we thought it had been tracked down, but now we don't have any clues. (By the way, if anyone is interested in solving a mystery, leave a comment!)

My heart continues to break over that. Sometimes sad things happen ... sometimes a lot of sad things happen ... sometimes they pile upon one another until one's heart nearly breaks to bear it.

Piano #2 also has a little heartbreak for me. I was quite proud of the piano. This was MY piano. I worked and worked and bought myself a beautiful, black grand. It wasn't huge (it had to fit in my mother's duplex, after all, with piano #1 while I was "recuperating" from my first attempt at college), it wasn't glossy, but it was definitely GRAND and it was mine. Again, the solace in the keys found my heart many times over the next few years. The heartbreak? Well, it was for a good cause, but it was sold for a more "practical" instrument.

"Piano" #3 isn't really a piano. It was a dream I began to pursue in music and ministry. I needed a keyboard, the Christian band I was in needed a keyboard, and since I couldn't haul my grand piano with me as I went back to college (this time for Music Evangelism and Performance) it was sold and I bought a keyboard. This instrument went beyond my own solace and made a difference in the lives of others. This is where my own creativity began to give birth and I began to pour out of my heart not just in my own meditations, but in public. I brought this with me when I was married along with all my hopes and dreams of impacting the world.

You guessed it, there's heartbreak. My then-husband convinced me to sell mine (his was newer and better). Of course it made sense, but it wasn't mine and all my history left with that instrument. As an anniversary gift, however, a digital piano found its way into the living room. "Piano" #4 isn't a "real" piano. It was digital, but it was better than no piano! I don't recall ever writing any music on that one. I guess there's not a lot to remember. He talked me into selling that, too.

FINALLY ... my Piano #5 makes an entrance, and this one is SPECIAL! I have relatives who are making a big move, and after my grandmother's estate and much housecleaning going on, an old piano is rediscovered. Initially, it's future was the dump. Thankfully my father asked if I would be interested in the piano if it could be restored. WOULD I??? WOW! YES!!!

It takes a long, long time and thousands of dollars, but this summer it was finally done. The family met together on August 6th, my late grandmother's birthday. We all gathered at my father's home in Minnesota. My aunts have brought music from their childhood. This is the piano they played when they were little. Family favorites were played. My children looked bored (which bothered me), but the rest of us found tears in our eyes many times. I learned things about my family and heard stories I never knew. They talked about how they would dance in the living room to the music. They gathered together to sing. One aunt played a childhood song that my grandfather had dubbed, "Tinkle Tinkle BANG BANG" and we laughed and cried when we heard the music.

This piano is special. It's practically alive with the stories and the history woven into my family's tapestry. While I hope to still find the other piano, I feel like God has given me a special gift. Tears can't tell it, my heart can only feel it. I think it's time for me to play again.

One of these things is not like the other ...

Two sweet little blonde girls with fair skin wearing winter coats in their Brownie meeting room ... yet ... AHHHHHHHHH! You know which blondie belongs to me! For those of you who think my little one is quiet? Ummmmmm ....

One of these things is not like the other ...

There really is a difference! Phone? Bone? They rhyme. That's as close as I can come. Maybe the dog is blind? Or at least colorblind? What I want to know is how she can have a chew bone for months that barely has a mark! Does someone know dog-speak? I need to communicate a few things to our adopted pooch to help make this living arrangement agreeable to both parties. At the moment it's tipping to the side of ... THE DOG!

By the way ... to my friends and family, if you need to call use the cell phone!

What my dog ate today ...

tub of butter
half a loaf of bread
the chocolate chip bag
half a bag of peppermint chips

Yesterday? Soap.

Today? She puked.

Bwahhhston

The city was beautiful and cold by night ... intriguing and cold by day. I took photos of everything from trash to city lights, sugar roosters to subway musicians. And if I didn't have to go on a Starbucks tour, I would have wandered the streets even more in search of interesting things. My prized posession from this trip? A book titled "Prairie City" published by a company in Tulsa! I found it on a rack of books outside of a small store with a plethora of reading material. My wonderful find? $2! TWO DOLLAH!

A special treat was Robin Williams ... here just for the entertainment of the Yankee Dental Congress folks. I captured a clip of the favorite joke of the evening:

Boston Subways

In the underground myriad of lives sliding by one another a melody was softly soothing the cool, oil-stained air. I put a little money in his basked and asked if I could take pictures. He smiled and nodded while his fingers continued to stroke the music so easily from his guitar. I took a little video clip, too, but unfortunately stopped before he strummed his last chord and said, "Good timing," with an almost-shy smile as I complimented his music.

I hoped to see him again, but never did. The other musicians I heard just didn't have the same touch. Most were playing guitars in the places tucked away and designated as a "performance area" and while it was nice, it wasn't his gentle sound. But I found that I missed that musical flavor when no one was there. Except for one odd pair ... they could barely play because of someone harassing them! We kept sliding further and further away from the scene.

Girl Scout Cookies ... Order until Feb. 4!

The weather has kept our little Brownies indoors for weeks it seems. Thankfully, I just got word today that the Girl Scout cookie sale is extended one more week. I still haven't been able to get my daughter's REAL kit and have to leave town again ... so in the meantime, here are the cookies that are available! If any of you want to change your order (now that you see everything) either email me (those that know me have my email) or leave a comment here.

Her little "videos" have been popular ... so if you haven't seen them, just scroll down a few entries and you'll find the embedded video players. Or you can go directly to Clipshack to see them with the following links:

Football Pileup

It was a pileup this afternoon. I think everyone was quite happy to see Kevin today. The dog (who has been classically SCARED of anyone male and slowly has at least accepted Kevin) jumped on him when he came in the door! The guys had their Bears jerseys and had my daughter looking for their "twins" throughout the game. I was quite content to snuggle with the pack on the sofa! Well ... ok ... that's kind of a lie. I did end up taking a pile of photos and finishing lunch and doing dishes and starting supper. The work is never done!

Crazy Winters

They said it was crazy ... but we went anyway! The road to Dallas wasn't all that interesting, much less dangerous! But this was a cool tree I spotted on the Oklahoma side. There wasn't as much ice as in my front yard, but enough to claim some winter action!

My new favorite quote ...

"Why not go out on a limb? That is where the fruit is." - Mark Twain

Or in our case, this weekend ... that is where the ice is! I have been CRAVING snow boots or even just hiking boots so I can go take photos of this winter wonderland without being a danger to traffic. The prairie areas are amazing ... some with tall grasses that look like crystal sheaths, some with intricate branches reflecting on a sea of glass, even the fences and the patterns shining and sparkling ... WOW.

Crazy Kids ...

OK ... so we have ICE now? Oklahoma has had two "little" winter storms and I'm being accused of bringing it! WHO ME? I try to tell everyone I'm from Georgia, but this northern prairie girl is somehow known for her snow-laden upbringing instead of her recent stint in the south. But can you believe my son? He was out "skating" on our lawn today in FLIP FLOPS (while his sister was in army boots)! Crazy kids.

She remade the video ...

Evidently my video production was TOO tame! I laugh. What's wrong with Cookie Monster? She wanted to decorate with hearts and have better music (that Hilary would like, and definitely NOT Sesame Street)! How do 7 year olds get so sophisticated?

Girl Scout Cookies ... this is a first!

Even though the weather prevented the big Cookie Kick Off, my little Brownie had ideas of her own about getting the word out about Girl Scout Cookies. She had the thought to send ecards to family and friends and wrote the little letter she wanted. Then we took pictures. She was pretending to "camp" inside my light tent. She picked out the ones she liked (minus a few vetos from Mom) and she gave me her list of pictures for her very own ecard. She wants to save the wild ones for her ecard to Hilary Duff. So, if any of you know her email address, feel free to leave a comment! LOL

Though video clips were still on her list upon going to bed, I told her we'd save those for Hilary, too. And while she went to sleep, I took her little handwritten letter (I wish I could have it show up in the titles in her handwriting - it's so cute) and put her ecard together. So, to our friends and family, here comes the newest little cookie salesgirl to hit the town ... drum roll please ... (you can click on the video player image below):

Did you know that Girl Scout Cookies aren't just a corporate fundraiser? I always thought they were. But the girls actually get cookie credit for what they sell, and they can use it for camps, uniforms, patches, trips, all kinds of things within the Council. Pretty cool! And it's nice for me as a mom to know my child is not just expecting to go places, but is learning to work and help make her own path toward the things she wants to do. And there's also a lot more to Girl Scouts than I ever realized. It's all about leadership and building confidence in girls. But I'll get on my soapbox later. Or maybe I'll blog about it in my other blog: I'm A Girl Scout!

School Assembly ... in the SNOW!

It's snowing AGAIN ... and I wasn't so sure I'd be able to make it to her school, but I braved the weather and arrived intact! That sounds so weird from a northern girl now living in the south! But down here, it's as if snow equipment doesn't exist! I was absolutely floored when I heard that residential streets are cleared by ...... (drum roll) ...... the residents! Anyway, I was surprised to find so many parents at the school (until I realized they were coming to remove their kids a little early). My daughter kept looking and looking and finally found me in the wings taking photos ... she was VERY happy, especially when she found out she could come home with me after the assembly. I don't own a snow scraper, so a CD cover had to do when we got to the car and it was already icing over! OK - new shopping list: gloves, scraper, earmuffs.

Brownie Delight ...

FINALLY! We are back to Brownies after a holiday and weather delay! The little girls are so cute. Mine was the "Helper" for the evening (they each have jobs for each meeting) and got to cover for 3 people who weren't there. She LOVED that! My little helper.

After the big meeting, we all went out for pizza (big brother included - who provided some teenage comedy for us adults) and had quite a time with two other friends and their moms! Our waiter was fun and the girls had a great time trying to give him "cooties" ... but the quote that came from the back seat on our way home was accidentally hilarious: Her little voice rang out, "I liked touching Dave! That was fun!" Oh boy. I caught my breath, "WHAT???" Those words from my 7 year old? Ahhh ... the cooties. We burst out laughing when the realization hit! Innocence is so precious.

NO PHOTOS ALLOWED!

Tonight is a night of mourning ... over hair. My son had a haircut coming, and if you've seen the blog, he had plenty of it. I had thought we would be taking a photo of a 3-4" reduction in hair, but plans went awry when the stylist basically gave him a BOWL CUT! At least a 2nd stylist stepped in to help shag up the style a bit. And I went on an emergency Wal-Mart run to get some hair products. Unfortunately, I gave all mine away when we moved or we would have had a plentiful stash of goo. So ... I have a feeling he won't be very visible in front of the camera lens and I don't blame him. I really feel sorry for him. He had the longest, coolest hair in school and now he feels like a dork and wants to hide for 2 months.

It's tough to ask a teenager to see past the exterior. Granted, a person should be valued for what's inside, but I have a feeling kids can be ruthless. As a mom, I can see all kinds of opportunity in this ... I want my kids to be confident and enjoy who they are regardless of what the rest of the world thinks. But I also want them to enjoy how they look as well. So ... I'll drag out what's left of my arsenal, get up early, and see what we can do to make his hair unbowl and hopefully get a messy, maybe even cool (is that too much to ask?) hairstyle going tomorrow.
